The story

Darren Hammond first stepped onto a dance floor at five years old, at the Beverly Hammond Dance School in Pretoria, South Africa. By his teens he had four Under-12 South African Latin titles and a second place at the Under-18 Freestyle World Championships. At nineteen — managing a pizza shop by day — he auditioned for So You Think You Can Dance South Africa and finished runner-up in front of the whole country.

The international circuit learned his name quickly. With Kylie Brown he took third at the British Open in Blackpool, came back the next year and won it, then took the WDC World Under-21 Latin Championship. As a professional he became South Africa's highest-ranked competitive Latin dancer, a fixture in the Top 12 at every major festival since 2015. With his partner, Ukrainian champion Marina Steshenko, he won the Hollywood DanceSport Championships in 2022, took second at the United States Open, and placed top five at both Blackpool and the WDC World Professional Latin Championships. Today the partnership stands third in the world.

Between competitions he teaches — Hong Kong, Europe, the United States, online — the kind of coach other coaches send their students to. Which is why the surgery cuts twice: it has stopped the competitor and the mentor.
