02Asking and declining gracefully
It's perfectly normal to ask strangers to dance, and just as normal to decline one. Keep it kind and brief, and don't take a 'no' personally — people sit out for all kinds of reasons.
04What to wear — competitions
Attire is part of the sport, and it's often regulated by level. Lower levels (Newcomer, Bronze) usually have modest dress codes that limit elaborate costuming and rhinestones; higher levels open up to the full ballgowns and Latin costumes you see on stage. Your teacher will guide you — and you can rent before you buy.
05Respect all around
Applaud the other couples, be gracious whether you win or lose, and remember the judges and volunteers are part of what makes the day possible. The community is small and kind — you'll see the same faces for years.
