Samba comes to the city
Samba took urban form in early-20th-century Rio, carried from Bahian roots. Carnaval made it a national art; the ballroom made it a world one.
The first samba schools paraded in the late 1920s; the Sambadrome now seats tens of thousands. A top school's parade fields thousands of dancers and a drum corps hundreds strong.
