Where it comes from
The rumba's roots run through the music of enslaved Africans in Cuba, where it evolved into a slow, sensual partner dance defined by continuous Cuban motion. Of all the Latin dances it keeps the closest tie to its origins: the music is a love song, and the dance behaves like one.
It is “the dance of love” — the slowest of the Latin five, and the one where technique and feeling are hardest to tell apart.
How it moves
International rumba keeps its most famous secret in the timing: there is no step on beat 1. The dancer moves on 2, 3, 4 — then melts through 1, letting the hips complete the action. That suspended beat, filled with Cuban motion, is where the dance's longing lives. Straight legs, delayed weight, and unbroken connection between partners do the rest.
